Euro Rising III: The Final Episode (September/October 2001)
From
the islands we descended upon our soon to be friends Peta and
Mimi as we had been introduced to them by our friend Sarah.
Their home looked down on the city of Patras in the Peloponnese.
From this vantage point we scooped out the rest of our time in
Greece and made skirmishes to the ancient sites of Olympia,
Delphi, Mycenae, Argos, Epidaurus and Nafplion. But the most
interesting time was sitting around Peta's home with Mother Mary
(80 years), Auntie (90 years), Salina, the extended family as
well as 3 dogs a dozen cats and chickens. It really gave as
insight into the real Greek life and we enjoyed our peek.
We
then sailed to Corfu for a few days before sailing the rest of
the way to Italy and taking the train to Pompeii. In Corfu the
best thing we found was a nearly deserted nude beach and fish
soup. But in Pompeii we discovered the remains of this ancient
city caught in the act of living while the volcano nearby buried
everything in ash. We then scurried up to Milan before visiting
the area of Tuscany and the cities of Florence, Siena and San
Gimignano. It was like we'd saved the best for last as the
ramparts and towers of these middle age towns enthralled us.
We finally returned to Milan for the opening of a small
exhibition of my paintings at a club called "Cargo". After
shopping madly for the next day, Angie and I finally headed back
to Rome and our flight to Bangkok where we now sit as we prepare
to re-enter Singapore atmosphere in time for my exhibition "Euro
Rising" at London Fine Art on November 23rd. For further details
about the trip and to view all the paintings, please drop into
the gallery if you are in the neighborhood or visit the website.
Warm regards,
Greg and Angie
