As a child, swimming and painting were fun activit As a child, swimming and painting were fun activities, which inadvertently strengthened my body and spirit. At 18, I began seriously competing in the Paralympics and when I was 24, I moved from California to Taiwan to study Chinese arts. In my early years competing, my nemesis was another American swimmer and I was frustrated because though I felt my training and commitment were superior, he always won more medals. When I went to Taiwan to study Chinese Arts, I religiously devoted myself to my studies yet my buddy who seemed to do the bare minimum always got better grades than I did which didn’t sit right with me. I see now that I was looking for satisfaction in the wrong places. I was striving for external recognition and wasn’t acknowledging the long-term internal character building that my training in the pool and classroom were facilitating.

But more importantly, sports and arts have always been my lifeline when times got tough. Whenever the wheels feel off the cart, I knew that diving into the pool or my paints would resuscitate me. These activities might not fix problems, but they helped me to rise above the turmoil long enough to paddle out of the whitewater. I still maintain my health through sports and I keep growing through art. I am grateful for finding out early on what activities strengthen my body and spirit while helping to make me a better person.

Stop Fighting Each Other The World and half of Am Stop Fighting Each Other

The World and half of America breathes a sigh of relief as a new President is proclaimed. And yet as we adjust, it is strikingly apparent that we have not succeeded or advanced but rather we have merely scratched our way back to zero. America must change its dance moves from one step forward and two steps back. The Nation needs to come together, make decisions, take action and move forward. We can’t afford this inefficient stumbling into the future. We need to stop fighting each other! Www.atrendstore.com/wearableart

The Little Engine that Could: As a boy with polio The Little Engine that Could: As a boy with polio, sometimes life sucked. Why could my friends run around freely playing kick-the-can while I could only hop around on crutches and braces? I felt God had short-changed me. Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep at night. But on other nights, Mom would read me a book, “The Little Engine that Could”. My life would never have turned out the way it did were it not for the simple wisdom found in this little book.
Four large spotted wood owls nest in a rain-tree a Four large spotted wood owls nest in a rain-tree along my running path. Two adults and two offspring. The adults sit patiently at dusk, resting and gathering the strength needed for the night’s hunt. The offspring jump and flit from branch to branch perhaps unconcerned or unaware of what is needed for the challenges ahead.

I’ve seen this behavior during the Paralympics where new young studs strut while veterans lie in wait for the precise moment when everything in one’s being is needed for the assault.

These days, I too find my discretionary energy channeled more judiciously.

Rebooting in the Empty Spaces: My freshman year a Rebooting in the Empty Spaces:
My freshman year at Franklin & Marshall College challenged me to think more deeply about life. Philosophy 101 was no exception. After much procrastination, the hypothesis I set out to prove was that, “events that don't happen in our lives affect us just as much as incidents that do happen to us.” Okay, maybe I was not meant to be a rocket scientist either but this investigation introduced me to the concept of Yin & Yang. As many of you may know, were it not for Covid19, As many of you may know, were it not for Covid19, yesterday would have been the Opening Ceremony for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Today, Netflix released their latest documentary, “Rising Phoenix”, about the journey from pain to perfection that Paralympians navigate. The film’s premise is that humans, like the Phoenix, can and do rise from the ashes, and create lives they can truly be proud of. I think this film is relevant for all of us and not just those who have competed in the Paralympics. In the words of Prince Harry, “Lives are changed on the track and in the stands.”
Watching the film will expand your world.
