UNESCO site Hanifaru is a rugby pitch of water in an ancient atoll where Manta Rays congregate yearly to feed in the plankton rich waters. Like a bowl in the ocean just a few dozen meters deep, this magic spot attracts nature enthusiasts hoping to witness a once in a lifetime ballet of up to 150 feeding Mantas.

We’ve been to Hanifaru before and saw nothing but sand. Even during the season it can be hit or miss. But going on a full or new moon stacks the odds in the diver’s favor and this time we struck it rich. Reaching the spot in the middle of the open ocean by boat, we dive into the sea with mask and snorkel and make our way into the middle of the lagoon. Suddenly we are surrounded by a scrum of Manta Rays. We are absorbed by dozens of giant spaceship-like creatures doing cartwheels and spinning about. With carbon black tops and pearl white underbellies, these magnificent creatures fly though the water often in single file like the coordinated takeoffs and landings of airplanes. Like stings of black and white saucers sailing through the sea, we watch as they majestically scoop up the plankton into their menacing looking gapping mouths before circling around for more.

We float in the water breathing silently through our snorkels as these massive prehistoric looking beasts pass within inches, never once bumping us. They are smart and very aware of our presence as well as that of their playmates- rarely touching each other. For over half an hour we are treated to a manta dance as they glide up from the depths towards the surface capturing dinner before breaching over backwards and descending again. Ballerinas of the sea with no signs of stage fright.

We are blessed to be here to witness this performance. A dance, which only a few luck humans have the honor of taking part in. #angietanburns

Instagram post 2138018050410295975_4245914289 At dusk, gentle rain patters down on Garessio. Feels like fall in the Sierras and I’m watching from the warmth of a cabin in the hills. But for two weeks we have traipsed across countryside and cobblestone streets stopping here and there to connect with and possibly capture a bit of the color, shapes and atmosphere of these near empty Italian mountain villages. It’s a quiet and accepting place that allows us to set up shop anywhere and spread paint around to mostly the astonishment of the locals who try as they might to interpret our interpretations of their own little town. But I think they like it and the fact that someone is registering and appreciating their tiny touch of sanity where people stroll the streets and with church bells ring on the hour. Yesterday a cacophony of activity, conversations and cups of coffee broadcast a robust community just up until it was lunch time until suddenly the square was vacant of any signs of life. We watch and capture and try to connect with it all. It’s what we do. We are artists trying to remember and remind that quiet old places where life has experienced every imaginable permutation of the four seasons of time and man is really worth stopping to look and reflect upon for more time than it takes to snap a selfie. #gregoryburnsart

Traveling & Arriving 1999

This body of work represents a journey and an artist’s search for places of sanctuary. The journey began in 1984 when I first arrived in Asia to study Chinese painting in Taiwan. Through the years, like the intrepid fishing vessel, I cast a wide net, traveling physical and spiritual landscapes, in search of spaces in which I could discover and actualize my potential. The exhibition, Traveling and Arriving – In Search of Sanctuary, represents a departure and an arrival. While expanding upon decades of realistic travel painting as well as themes steeped in Sung Dynasty landscape painting, this work seeks to embody the essence of moving and searching in a physical, spiritual and liquid environment. In the process, I trust that my art has arrived at a new destination.
