Stop Fighting Each Other The World and half of Am Stop Fighting Each Other

The World and half of America breathes a sigh of relief as a new President is proclaimed. And yet as we adjust, it is strikingly apparent that we have not succeeded or advanced but rather we have merely scratched our way back to zero. America must change its dance moves from one step forward and two steps back. The Nation needs to come together, make decisions, take action and move forward. We can’t afford this inefficient stumbling into the future. We need to stop fighting each other! Www.atrendstore.com/wearableart

The Little Engine that Could: As a boy with polio The Little Engine that Could: As a boy with polio, sometimes life sucked. Why could my friends run around freely playing kick-the-can while I could only hop around on crutches and braces? I felt God had short-changed me. Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep at night. But on other nights, Mom would read me a book, “The Little Engine that Could”. My life would never have turned out the way it did were it not for the simple wisdom found in this little book.

The adults sit patiently at dusk, resting and gathering the strength needed for the night’s hunt. The offspring jump and flit from branch to branch perhaps unconcerned or unaware of what is needed for the challenges ahead.

I’ve seen this behavior during the Paralympics where new young studs strut while veterans lie in wait for the precise moment when everything in one’s being is needed for the assault.

These days, I too find my discretionary energy channeled more judiciously.

Rebooting in the Empty Spaces: My freshman year a Rebooting in the Empty Spaces:
My freshman year at Franklin & Marshall College challenged me to think more deeply about life. Philosophy 101 was no exception. After much procrastination, the hypothesis I set out to prove was that, “events that don't happen in our lives affect us just as much as incidents that do happen to us.” Okay, maybe I was not meant to be a rocket scientist either but this investigation introduced me to the concept of Yin & Yang. As many of you may know, were it not for Covid19, As many of you may know, were it not for Covid19, yesterday would have been the Opening Ceremony for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Today, Netflix released their latest documentary, “Rising Phoenix”, about the journey from pain to perfection that Paralympians navigate. The film’s premise is that humans, like the Phoenix, can and do rise from the ashes, and create lives they can truly be proud of. I think this film is relevant for all of us and not just those who have competed in the Paralympics. In the words of Prince Harry, “Lives are changed on the track and in the stands.”
Watching the film will expand your world.

As a child growing up with paralysis from Polio, I As a child growing up with paralysis from Polio, I intuitively looked for role models to give me strength. Like many boys at the time, Superman held promise and through thick and thin, always managed to save the day. But I also recall nights, crying myself to sleep asking my Catholic God why I was handicapped. Other times, my mother would read me bedtime stories and, “The Little Engine that Could” became my favorite, teaching me that if we think we can, we often can. My childhood wasn’t typical nor was it too complex. But it held promise and hope and I am grateful for the optimism I managed to escape with.
My country and I have changed a lot over the decades. We have tried our best and landed where we are. However, I am truly saddened watching the demise of an America that held such promise. The UN-united States of America have wreaked destruction on themselves with no outside assistance. There is nobody else to blame except perhaps our own ignorance and ingrained sense of entitlement.
Right or wrong, as I grew up, the USA was traditionally seen as a positive light in the world. One might argue that the American, ‘can do attitude’ or ‘power of positivity’ offers both good and bad, but at the end of the day, seeing cups as half full instead of half empty has merit. I believe though not perfect, America once offered an uplifting influence.
I’m afraid that this is no longer the case. With the veil removed, citizens of second and third world countries realize that America also has scores of uneducated people making poor decisions. We used to be seen as a progressive land of good morals and hard work. But I don’t see this anymore and our tenure as a leading nation in the world has lapsed. Unlike the Roman Empire, our trajectory was short lived. Without positive attitudes and roll models to emulate, I’m afraid that the chances of Superman lifting us out of this quagmire are low.
And yet, I want to hope. I want to believe that we can correct our course. And maybe if we think we can, we will. Because the world still needs a bright light, one country that offers a powerfully positive alternative to an existence of mere survival and the status quo. Something to aspire to.

What’s next? Well I’d suggest that if anyone was interested in advancing Singapore as a cultural center there needs to be a tidal shift from consumption to creation- more specifically a transition from stomach focus to heart focus.

A virus named Covid has hijacked our lives. The world is fixated on its effects and how humankind must now adapt. Lifestyles have been truncated. I can do a fraction of what once was taken for granted.

Yet for those who have not been beaten too harshly, there remains the present. This moment right now, which is all we are left with. This day, this instant, this activity right in front of us. Not some future plan, not some other place or anything else but right now. Covidification has stripped me of an imagined future and forced me into being present. As I relax my grip on controlling the world & shift from having to being.

Surrounded by Sea 2019

Since childhood, I have explored the world sketching and painting above and below the sea. Swimming, surfing and diving in most of our planets oceans has nurtured my body and soul while bringing me face to fin with the undersea world. With an acrylic slate and pencil I sketch manta rays and coral cliffs while scuba diving, listening to the rhythmic sound of air coming through my regulator. I cherish this feeling of floating in the sea as the undulating waves from a thousand miles away, rise and fall before spilling onto some sandy beach or rocky shelf. In the studio I relive these experiences and try to paint what swaying with the currents or surfing down a wave feels like.

Over the past twenty years I have been fortunate enough to be the Artist-in-Residence at dozens of resorts across the globe. A favorite destination has been the Maldives where we dive and make art while surrounded by sea. This collection of paintings completed on islands smaller than a Home Depot parking lot and/or in my various studios, attempt to express the depth and richness of the colors and feelings elicited while submerged in this vast water world with it’s currents, corals and creatures. In the ocean I am in my element.
